OPHTHALMOLOGY OPD SERVICES OVERVIEW

Outpatient Department (OPD) services in Ophthalmology cover comprehensive outpatient eye care, ranging from routine vision screening and refraction to specialized diagnostic tests and minor clinical procedures.

Ophthalmology OPD Services
Standard Consultation & Preliminary Screenings

When a patient arrives at the Ophthalmology OPD, they undergo foundational workup tests administered by an optometrist or ophthalmic assistant prior to specialist consultation:

  • Visual Acuity Assessment: Measuring clarity using Snellen, LogMAR, or digital vision charts.
  • Refraction & Prescription: Autorefraction and subjective trial lenses to prescribe corrective glasses or contact lenses.
  • Intraocular Pressure (IOP) Measurement (Tonometry): Screening for glaucoma using Non-Contact Tonometry (puff test) or Goldmann Applanation Tonometry.
  • Slit-Lamp Biomicroscopy: Magnified examination of the anterior segment (cornea, iris, lens, and conjunctiva).
  • Fundus / Dilated Eye Exam: Evaluating the retina, optic nerve, and macula using an ophthalmoscope or specialized lenses following application of dilating eye drops.
Specialized Diagnostic OPD Services

High-resolution imaging and functional evaluations performed in the outpatient clinical setup:

Diagnostic Service Core Purpose
Visual Field Testing (Perimetry) Maps peripheral vision to monitor glaucoma progression or neurological deficits.
Optical Biometry / A-Scan Measures eye axial length and calculates precise Intraocular Lens (IOL) power prior to cataract surgery.
B-Scan Ultrasonography Ultrasound imaging used when deep interior posterior segment structures are obscured by dense cataracts or vitreous hemorrhages.
Fundus Photography & Angiography High-definition retinal imaging and Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA) dye studies to evaluate retinal vascular health.
OPD Procedures & In-Office Interventions

Minor therapeutic treatments performed directly in the OPD procedure room without requiring hospital admission:

1. Laser Procedures
  • YAG Capsulotomy: Treats posterior capsule opacification ("after-cataract").
  • YAG Peripheral Iridotomy (PI): Creates a tiny pathway for fluid flow in narrow-angle glaucoma.
  • Retinal Photocoagulation / Retinal Laser: Treats diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears, or vascular occlusions.
2. Minor Surgical Procedures
  • Chalazion incision and curettage, foreign body removal, lacrimal sac probing/syringing for blocked tear ducts, and suturing superficial eyelid lacerations.
3. Dry Eye & Specialized Clinics
  • Schirmer's testing, tear film break-up time (TBUT) analysis, punctal plug insertion, and low-vision rehabilitation counseling.
