The Department of Respiratory Medicine (Pulmonary Medicine) at Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital, Vishnupuri, Nanded, Maharashtra, is a specialized department dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and comprehensive management of diseases affecting the respiratory system.

The Department of Pulmonary Medicine was established in 1994. Initially, the department provided undergraduate teaching and hospital services for patients suffering from respiratory diseases. Subsequently, postgraduate training in Pulmonary Medicine was started in 1998, initially with one MD student per year. Over the years, the department has expanded its clinical, academic, and diagnostic services to provide comprehensive respiratory healthcare.

The department provides Outpatient Department (OPD) and inpatient services for patients with a wide range of respiratory disorders, including bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary tuberculosis, pneumonia, interstitial lung diseases, pleural diseases, sleep-related breathing disorders, respiratory infections, and other pulmonary conditions.

A major strength of the department is its advanced diagnostic and therapeutic infrastructure. The department has a 6-bedded Intensive Respiratory Care Unit (IRCU) equipped with invasive and non-invasive ventilators. It also has approximately 40 inpatient beds for male and female patients, along with specialized facilities such as an advanced Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) laboratory, Polysomnography laboratory, and Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy services.

The department also plays an important role in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. It provides clinical teaching, bedside training, tutorials, and practical exposure to undergraduate medical students. The MD program in Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases/Pulmonary Medicine is recognized as a postgraduate specialty program. Current official records list MD – Tuberculosis & Respiratory Diseases/Pulmonary Medicine among the postgraduate courses at the institution.

The department is supported by qualified teaching faculty, including Professor and Head Dr. Vijaykumar R. Kapse, along with faculty members in the ranks of Associate Professor and Assistant Professor.
