The Department of Microbiology, along with its Central Laboratory, is currently situated in the OPD Building of Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College (Dr. S.C.G.M.C.), Nanded.

Established in 1990, the department was founded to aid clinicians with rapid and accurate diagnoses of infectious diseases, guiding appropriate patient treatment and management. The department features specialized laboratories dedicated to various sub-disciplines of medical microbiology.

Since its inception, the department has undergone continual advancements, regularly incorporating state-of-the-art automated instrumentation to ensure enhanced speed, precision, and diagnostic accuracy.

The department is committed to establishing a state-of-the-art Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) to facilitate rapid diagnosis of COVID-19 and various other human viral pathogens.

In addition to diagnostic excellence, the department takes pride in imparting high-quality education to undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, training skilled microbiologists dedicated to patient care and academic excellence.
