1. Undergraduate Teaching, Training & Research

Training is provided to undergraduate medical students regarding various aspects of infectious diseases and microbial etiology through lectures, practicals, experiments, seminars, case studies, tutorials, demonstrations, museum literature, and charts. Students are educated on referral facilities for emerging, re-emerging, and outbreak pathogens (such as hospital-acquired infections, diphtheria, swine flu, and rare parasitic worms).

Diagnostic Enhancements: The department offers advanced testing including Scrub Typhus, Dengue, and Chikungunya ELISA, alongside rapid testing kits for Leptospira, TORCH, Scrub Typhus, and HCV to prevent diagnostic delays. Dedicated CBNAAT TB, ICTC, PPTCT, and CD4 testing centers (near the ART center) ensure timely and confirmatory diagnosis for HIV-positive patients.

2. Internship Training

As per NMC & MUHS Nashik guidelines, mandatory training for interns includes lectures, practical demonstrations, and hospital infection control rounds covering biomedical waste management, universal safety precautions, sterilization procedures, CSSD operations, sample collection/transport, needle stick injury protocols, and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP). This equips interns to curb multidrug-resistant (MDR) hospital-acquired infections and educate nursing staff, patients, and visitors.

3. Postgraduate Teaching, Training & Research

Upgraded from 1 to 5 M.D. Microbiology seats per year since 2020–21. PG training encompasses section-wise rotations, group discussions, seminars, journal clubs, referral service management, and field visits. In compliance with MUHS guidelines, candidates must complete a dissertation and publish at least one research paper.

National Health Programs: PG residents actively contribute to diagnostic services under key national health initiatives including IDSP, NTEP (RNTCP), National Leprosy Eradication Program, National Vector Borne Disease Control Program, and NACO.

4. BPMT Teaching & Training

Sanctioned with an annual intake of 20 seats since 2016–17 (Government of Maharashtra), the Bachelor of Paramedical Technology program provides hands-on technical training across laboratory sections to build skilled personnel for public health laboratories.

5. DMLT Teaching & Training

Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) students receive systematic practical instruction, group discussions, tutorials, and scheduled rotations across all seven laboratory sections of the microbiology department.

6. Nursing Staff Orientation & Refresher Training

Conducts regular induction and refresher modules for nursing personnel focusing on biomedical waste segregation, CSSD workflows, sterilization, needle stick safety, and PEP, complemented by practical education during routine infection control rounds.

7. Training in Emerging & Re-emerging Infections (VRDL & Pandemic Response)

Teaching staff and laboratory technicians undergo regular specialized training aligned with ICMR, DMER, State, and Central Government mandates (including MoHFW's Diksha App online modules). Staff members have completed RT-PCR training for establishing the VRDL and supporting partner institutions like SRTMU Nanded during public health emergencies.

8. Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (AMSP)

Faculty members trained in WHONET software at GMC Aurangabad spearhead the development and enforcement of the Institutional Antibiotic Policy and active AMSP surveillance.

9. Hospital Infection Control (HIC)

The department leads infection control training across healthcare cadres and actively monitors and enforces standard infection control practices hospital-wide.
