Functions & Objectives

1. UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING, TRAINING & RESEARCH

In this department, training is provided to undergraduate students regarding Basic Life Support (BLS). These trainings are conducted through lectures and hands-on CPR sessions. Lectures, Bedside clinics, DOAP (Demonstration, Observation, Assistance, Performance), Small Group Discussions (SGD), and Small Group Teaching (SGT) on basic anaesthesia topics are regularly delivered by the teaching faculty.

2. INTERNSHIP TRAINING

It is mandatory to complete a 1-year internship after passing MBBS. During the Internship Orientation Programme, training is provided on Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Perioperative Monitoring of patients, Spinal Anaesthesia, and Endotracheal Intubation. Internship includes a mandatory 15-day posting in the Department of Anaesthesiology, where interns are stationed in Operation Theatres and the Anaesthesia OPD.

3. POSTGRADUATE TEACHING, TRAINING & RESEARCH

As per NMC guidelines, admissions are granted for 9 MD seats every year, bringing the total strength to 27 postgraduate residents working in the department. During the Postgraduate Orientation Programme, BLS and ACLS training lectures are delivered to PG students across all specialties.

Academic activities are conducted 3 days a week in the form of Journal Reading, Seminars, Case Discussions, and Video Lectures. During their curriculum, PG students receive extensive hands-on training in regional and general anaesthesia, critical care management, and pain management.

During the 3-year tenure, each PG student must submit a dissertation, present at least one paper/poster at a State, National, or International Anaesthesia Conference, and publish one research paper as mandated by MUHS guidelines.

4. BACHELOR OF PARAMEDICAL TECHNOLOGY (BPMT) TRAINING

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Paramedical Technology programme receive structured teaching and practical training in accordance with university guidelines. Instruction is delivered via lectures, demonstrations, practical sessions, seminars, case discussions, and clinical presentations. Students are trained in patient care, operation theatre procedures, anaesthesia assistance, critical care practices, emergency management, and proper handling of medical equipment, while being encouraged to participate in academic workshops and conferences.

5. ORGAN DONATION INITIATIVES & AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

Departmental Committee: The Organ Donation Campaign was launched in 2015. An Organ Donation Committee was established with the Professor & Head of Anaesthesiology as President and an Associate Professor as Secretary. Two successful organ retrievals were executed in 2016. Organ donation awareness drives and pledge form registrations are conducted on a continuous basis.

Organ Donation Awareness Campaign (July 2024 – August 2025)
  • Institute: Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College, Vishnupuri, Nanded
  • Organized by: Department of Anaesthesiology
  • Guidance: Dean Dr. Sudhir Deshmukh
  • Head of Department: Dr. Vaishnavi Vishwas Kulkarni
  • Nodal Officer: Dr. Nazima Memon (Associate Professor)
  • Co-ordinator: Dr. Minakshi Chole (Assistant Professor)

Objectives & Events: Inaugurated by Dean Dr. Sudhir Deshmukh on July 15, 2024, the awareness drive aimed to educate the public and medical community about organ donation while addressing queries. Public awareness rallies were held in August 2024 and August 2025. The campaign was attended by leadership including Ayurvedic College Dean Dr. Yashwant Patil, Vice Dean Dr. Hemant Godbole, Medical Superintendent Dr. Y. H. Chavan, Dr. Sanjaykumar More, Matron Mrs. Alka Jadhav, and various Departmental Heads.

Pledge & Rally Inauguration: All attendees took a formal pledge for organ donation. The rally was officially flagged off by flying tricolor balloons and waving the green flag by District Collector Shri Abhijeet Raut alongside Dean Dr. Sudhir Deshmukh.

6. OPERATION THEATRE & NON-OPERATING ROOM ANAESTHESIA (NORA)
  • In-Theatre Anaesthesia: Providing comprehensive general and regional anaesthesia services for routine and emergency surgical procedures across General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
  • NORA Services: Extending anaesthesia and sedation coverage outside the operating room, including CT Scan and MRI in Diagnostic Radiology, and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) in Psychiatry.
7. CRITICAL CARE & POST-ANAESTHESIA CARE UNIT (PACU)

The Department manages Post-Anaesthesia Critical Care and Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) patients. Comprehensive Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) services ensure safe, immediate postoperative recovery through continuous monitoring of airway, ventilation, hemodynamics, level of consciousness, pain, and oxygen saturation. Anaesthesiologists lead multidisciplinary interventions in airway management, mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic stabilization, resuscitation, acute pain control, and management of postoperative complications.

8. CENTRAL GAS MANIFOLD SYSTEM

The Central Gas Manifold System is entirely overseen and maintained by the Department of Anaesthesiology. Key infrastructure includes:

  • Central Liquid Oxygen Storage: Total capacity of 53 KL (comprising 10 KL, 10 KL, 20 KL, and 13 KL tanks).
  • Pipeline Terminals: 700 active oxygen pipeline points across the hospital.
  • Cylinder Backup: 300 Jumbo cylinders and 250 Small oxygen cylinders.
  • Central Compressed Gas Units: Central Suction Unit alongside Medical Air and Surgical Air supply lines.
