Functions & Objectives

FUNCTIONS AND OBJECTIVES

The functions of the Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) department encompass the daily clinical, surgical, and operational activities required to deliver comprehensive care. These functions are divided into specialized service areas:

1. Outpatient and Diagnostic Services
  • Comprehensive Clinical Consultations: Evaluating and diagnosing conditions related to the ear, nose, throat, and head/neck region for pediatric and adult patients.
  • Endoscopic Evaluations: Performing in-clinic diagnostic procedures such as rigid nasal endoscopy, flexible fiberoptic laryngoscopy, and stroboscopy to visualize the upper airway and vocal cords.
  • Minor Outpatient Procedures: Conducting routine interventions including ear wax (cerumen) disimpaction, intratympanic injections, nasal packing for epistaxis, local excision of small benign masses, and biopsy of neck masses.
2. Surgical and Inpatient Care
  • Otology and Neurotology: Performing micro-ear surgeries such as tympanoplasty, mastoidectomy, stapedotomy, and advanced procedures like cochlear implantation and skull base surgery.
  • Rhinology and Anterior Skull Base: Executing Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS), septoplasty, rhinoplasty, and endoscopic management of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks and pituitary tumors.
  • Laryngology and Airway Management: Conducting micro laryngeal surgeries for vocal cord lesions, airway dilation, and complex tracheal resections.
3. Emergency and Trauma Services
  • 24/7 Acute Care: Providing immediate intervention for ENT emergencies, including severe epistaxis (nosebleeds) and acute deep neck space infections.
  • Airway Emergencies: Securing compromised airways through emergency intubation, cricothyroidotomy, or tracheostomy.
  • Foreign Body Retrieval: Removing accidentally ingested or inhaled foreign bodies from the ear canal, nasal cavity, pharynx, esophagus, and tracheobronchial tree.
  • Maxillofacial Trauma: Managing fractures of the nasal bone, mandible, and mid-face in coordination with plastic surgery and trauma teams.
4. Allied Diagnostic and Rehabilitative Functions
  • Audiology Services: Conducting pure tone audiometry (PTA), tympanometry, Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA), and Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) testing.
